In 1811, the Tennessee State Legislature established a county seat for Rutherford County. The town was first named “Cannonsburgh” in honor of Tennessee politician Newton Cannon, but it was soon renamed “Murfreesboro” for Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree.
