Located just south of the Belmont University campus, Nashville’s Belmont-Hillsboro neighborhood is a popular community. Its easy access to I-440 and 21st Avenue South means it’s easy to get to other great parts of the city, but there’s plenty to do right in the neighborhood too. From its real estate to all the activities it offers residents and visitors, here’s what to expect when you live in Belmont-Hillsboro.
The community of Bellmont-Hillsboro is a cultural hub rich with exciting food, arts, music, and much more, thanks to its proximity to Nashville. This area was once the home to one of the wealthiest women in the south, Adelicia Acklen, who built the Belmont Mansion in the 1850s—the mansion is now a beautiful museum on the grounds of Belmont University. Music fans love visiting The Gallery of Iconic Guitars, located near the mansion, and the Massey Performing Arts Center hosts a variety of live theater and musical performances year-round.
Many beautiful, vintage homes still stand in Belmont-Hillsboro, but there is a nice mixture of traditional brick homes and modern, updated townhomes and condos. This neighborhood is very walkable, making it an excellent place for people who want to explore the city center without having to drive. Medical centers, banks, and grocery stores are also close by.
Hillsboro Village is the hub of the community and features art galleries, restaurants, boutiques, and cozy cafes where neighbors and visitors alike gather. Hillsboro Village is also home to the historic Belcourt Theatre, founded in 1925. It once showed silent films, but today, the theater plays classic and independent films and features a unique concession area serving fresh pastries, craft beer, and more.
The Belmont-Hillsboro neighborhood has a storied history, and many homes still retain their original characteristics. Brick cottages and bungalows are common, and the neighborhood also features many Tudor and American four-square homes, which were popular at the time. Prairie homes are also common in the area, but after World War II, many of the larger homes were remodeled and turned into multi-family units. In 1980, the National Register of Historic Places recognized some homes in the neighborhood. Today, there is a mixture of older single-family homes and new construction homes, as well as condos, apartments, and townhomes.
There are many amenities in Belmont-Hillsboro, including unique museums, excellent dining, and shopping. The area is also home to a historic theater and a performing arts center. Plus, it’s within walking distance of the popular 12 South Shopping District, featuring many stores, restaurants, cafes, and much more. Residents are also extremely close to Nashville, a city well known for its country music roots. The area has a rich history, and many residents enjoy living here due to its accessibility to everything from healthcare facilities and schools to major nearby attractions.
The WeGo Star public transit allows residents to travel to and from downtown Nashville, and trains operate every weekday in the mornings and afternoons. Riders can get to Riverfront Station quickly, where buses wait to take them to their final destination. A large grocery store is located in the neighborhood as well as several other amenities, including a pediatric dentist’s office, a counseling center, a Circle K gas station, and Sevier Park. Belmont University and Whitten Field, a sports complex, are also located in the Belmont-Hillsboro neighborhood.
There is plenty of shopping in the Belmont-Hillsboro neighborhood. Kroger is the biggest grocery store and offers a large inventory of shelf-stable food, fresh baked goods, produce, and other necessities. A Village of Flowers sells beautiful fresh floral bouquets and plants. Residents can shop for men’s and women’s clothing at Posh Boutique or try Molly Green and Altar’d State for women’s clothing, shoes, jewelry, and accessories. Cosmic Connections is a unique boutique selling crystals, jewelry, candles, and all things metaphysical. Hillsboro Corner Shopping Center is also close by and features an assortment of stores where residents can find new treasures.
Because of its unique history, there are plenty of interesting things to do in the Belmont-Hillsboro community. The Frederick Hart Studio Museum features authentic work by the artist and allows visitors to view Hart’s unique artistic process. History buffs will appreciate visiting Belmont Mansion, a historic home built between 1849 and 1860. The mansion is the largest home built in Tennessee prior to the Civil War and now gives visitors insight into how the wealthiest people lived at the time. Attractions like the Nashville Zoo are close by, as well as other major attractions in the city.
Outdoor activities in Belmont-Hillsboro include visiting nearby parks, walking trails, and bike trails. Fannie Mae Dees Park, also known as “Dragon Park,” features a massive dragon sculpture decorated with over 1,000 mosaic tiles crafted by local residents. The sculpture honors Fannie Mae, who rallied to keep the space open during a major urban renewal project in the 1970s, and it’s now a public park. Residents can enjoy a nice afternoon picnic in the open fields or enjoy a game of tennis at the tennis courts. There are also playgrounds for kids to enjoy and an accessible play area called Lily’s Garden.
Sevier Park features a walking path, tennis courts, a basketball court, a playground, lots of shade trees, a creek, and a community center.

Nashville has a dynamic music scene with live music clubs, museums, and other entertainment all within a reasonable distance of the Belmont-Hillsboro area. Visit nearby attractions like the famous Ryman Auditorium or check out the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Fans of pop culture can enjoy a trip to Madame Tussauds Celebrity Wax Museum, featuring an assortment of lifelike celebrities, musicians, and more. The famed “Honky Tonk Highway” is full of amazing stops, including bars, music venues, and other legendary places that typically feature live musical acts year-round.
There are several employers near Belmont-Hillsboro, but most of the largest are located in Nashville, including Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which has approximately 40,000 employees. There are also several major healthcare companies nearby, including HCA Healthcare, Inc., National Healthcare Corp., Saint Thomas Health, Community Health Systems, and others.
Another major employer within a reasonable commuting distance from the community is Nissan North America, with its headquarters in nearby Franklin. Another car manufacturer, General Motors, employs more than 4,000 people in Tennessee.
Amazon also has a new location in Nashville and plans to employ approximately 5,000 full-time and seasonal employees.
The Belmont-Hillsboro area is home to an elementary, middle, and high school to serve students in the community. Zoned elementary schools include Eakin Elementary, Julia Green Elementary, and Waverly-Belmont Elementary School. West End Middle School welcomes 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and offers a variety of extracurricular activities and athletics. High school students in the neighborhood may attend Hillsboro High. Parents may also choose to enroll their children in one of many schools throughout the Metro Nashville Public Schools district based on the current zone map.
There are also several private schools available, including Christ the King School, serving pre-K through 8th grade; Lipscomb Academy Upper School for grades 9 through 12; and Belmont Weekday School, a private preschool. For higher education, Belmont University is within the neighborhood itself, and many students apply here from several south Nashville suburbs. Aside from Belmont University, other incredibly close universities include Vanderbilt University and Lipscomb University.
