Best Parks in Hendersonville

The city of Hendersonville, Tennessee, is also known as the "city by the lake" due to its proximity to Old Hickory Lake. Opportunities for year-round outdoor activities make this area a top vacation spot, with many natural spaces to explore. In addition to boating, fishing, and other water recreation, there are plenty of amazing parks to discover. From downtown to the surrounding communities, here's what to know about five of the best parks in and around Hendersonville.

Rockland Recreation Area

Rockland Recreation Area is a gem on the shores of Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville. Visitors can partake in several recreational activities, but the park is best known for being a great place to boat, waterski, swim, and fish. Anglers can catch walleye, catfish, bass, and crappie here.

Situated in a moderately wooded area, Rockland hosts several local and migratory wetland species that frequent the nature trails around the park. The hiking is rated easy and contains mostly flat, well-groomed trails.

Rockland Recreation Area has five spacious covered group shelters and one gazebo with grilling areas and picnic tables. The shelters are by the water, so bank fishing is popular here. Within the grassy areas, there is a playground and a volleyball court.

The Old Hickory Lake Visitor Center is great for learning more about the park's history, navigational facilities, and other community programs.

Moss-Wright Park

Moss-Wright Park is a haven for naturists and is a level 2 arboretum with at least 100 species of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants. Many public educational programs, botanists, and researchers visit this large park in the nearby city of Goodlettsville, which offers 147 acres of recreational opportunities and hosts the Goodlettsville Farmers Market.

Moss-Wright Park has a 2.5-mile loop. Over a mile of it runs alongside a wooded creek, and it's a remarkable place to take a peaceful walk. There are fitness zones along the way and a dedicated exercise area. Visitors come to watch games and play at the baseball courts, the football field, and the volleyball and soccer facilities.

Plenty of picnic areas and a pavilion have grills and picnic tables, and there's also a dog park and a playground. Readers can donate to the little free library or pick up a few books. Don't forget to check out the small museum in the park during your visit.

Moss-Wright Park is also where Historic Mansker's Station is located. The site consists of a reproduction 1779 log station and the Bowen Plantation House. The plantation is considered the longest-standing brick structure in central Tennessee. Tours of the sites are guided by interpreters in period costumes and are held Monday through Friday.

Drakes Creek Park and Athletic Complex

Visit Drakes Creek Park in Hendersonville, TN

Drakes Creek Park and Athletic Complex is a highlight of downtown Hendersonville and offers an array of amenities. Visitors can watch a game at several baseball, football, and soccer fields. The park also has practice areas, two sand volleyball courts, and a few walking trails.

The playground areas are well-equipped and have kid-friendly landings and play surfaces. Take a break at one of the shelters, where you can use the public grills for dining, or head to one of the convenient concession stands.

Drakes Creek Park hosts free outdoor concerts and festivals and is home to the annual tree lighting and Christmas parade.

Sanders Ferry Park

On the shores of a peninsula at Old Hickory Lake is Sanders Ferry Park, an excellent place to soak in the beauty of the great outdoors. Guests can access 70 acres of amenities, including sporting fields and a waterfront park with an ADA-compliant fishing pier and boat ramp. Two restroom facilities have showers for visitors after a day on the lake.

Additional features at Sanders Ferry Park include:

  • An 18-hole disc golf course
  • Basketball courts
  • Playground sites
  • An expansive model airplane field (only park in Hendersonville that has one)

This Hendersonville park is a great place to host large gatherings, as seven shelters accommodate 50 people, and one large group shelter seats up to 250 guests. Booking a shelter reservation date is highly recommended, especially during peak seasons.

Veteran's Park

Veteran's Park has several features that attract locals and vacationers. Playground areas, concessions, picnic shelters, and tables are great for reunions and other gatherings.

The main attractions are lighted baseball fields, a basketball court, and inline hockey rinks. Other features at Veteran's Park include a wooded trail for hiking and biking. Those who like to skate can use the year-round lighted skate park.

A treasured site here includes Mary's Magical Place, the first all-inclusive playground in the county.
