The Bell Witch is a legend spread throughout the state of Tennessee. Even though many of the stories out there about witches are just fictitious legends, some actually defy explanation and could be true.
About 45 miles from Nashville, there's a small town called Adams, Tennessee. This town is home to many of the old farming families and provides a large portion of the world’s dark fired tobacco. It's also home to a haunting with plenty of documentation and paranormal excitement.
This isn't just some type of ghost in a hallway that somebody spotted a few times. The stories of this so-called spirit are vicious, abusive and of one that wreaks havoc on the people around it. The legend includes John Bell and his family being abused for nearly four years by this spirit and it wasn't willing to leave them along.
Back in 1817, John Bell was walking on his farm, with his rifle. He saw an animal, which he thought was a dog. He fired his rifle and the animal disappeared. At the same time his children. Betsy and Drewry were walking in the orchid and noticed a woman walking beside them. When Betsy tried to speak to her, the woman disappeared.
The family was awaken by noises that night including floor scratching, rapping on the walls, birds flapping their wings and other noises. They searched for the cause of these noises with no luck. From there, the haunting escalated and eventually became so bad, it actually ended up killing John Bell. The witch announced she would leave for seven years and did, but returned to the home of John Bell Jr. seven years later.
She was also spotted in 1935 and many believe she is still present in the town of Adams. Some of the local witch sites you can enjoy include:
- The Bell Witch Haunting - This is a movie filmed locally about the witch.
- The Bell Witch Story - This is a play produced around the witch.
- The Bell Witch Cave - This is a tour of the Bell Witch Cave.
All of these provide a look into the hauntings and the story of the Bell Witch. If you love paranormal things, take the 45-mile journey north of Nashville to Adams, Tennessee.
